Family Tree Genie

What is Family Tree Genie?

Family Tree Genie is run by myself David Millward. Based in South Cheshire, I specialise in Cheshire, Staffordshire, Lancashire [including Manchester] and Derbyshire but have researched for many clients across the UK.

I will carry out family tree research on your behalf, tracing your ancestors as far back as available records, certificates and census information will allow. That’s whether you’re based in the UK, USA or Australia.

How will you find out about my family’s past?

On initial contact, I will request the family name and line you’d like us to trace and any other details you can provide, i.e. births, deaths, marriages, etc. I will then carry out some initial free and no obligation family tree research to see whether I can research your family history.

Once I’ve established that I can trace your ancestors, I’ll be able to produce a quotation at a guaranteed maximum cost – if, for some unforeseen reason, I am unable to progress as far as projected, my research charge reduces pro-rata. You will not overpay!!

How far back will you be able to trace my family line?

Once I’ve confirmed that I can research your family history, I will try to go back as far as I can, usually to the late 1700’s and even further where local and Parish Register records are available. For example, if you’re aged 30 years, I typically expect to uncover up to five or six generations of ancestors, born from 1800 onwards.

What information do you need to research my family tree?

Sometimes a name is all that is needed to get started but the more information supplied, the easier it is for me to help you. Any detail like birthdays, marriages, where they lived etc would be very helpful. I can then carry out some initial family research to see if I can trace your ancestors. Further into our research, I will undoubtedly contact you to ask questions about your family, i.e. names of grandparents, parents and children.

What can you find out about my family’s past?

Dependent on information and records available, I will be able to find out about marriages, births, deaths and the occupations of your ancestors. I’ll tell you where they lived, who they married and whether they had any children. Using our skills and expertise, I will try to uncover as much information as possible about your family.

Which areas of the UK do you cover?

No matter where you live, I can research your family history. My wife and I have helped people in Cheshire, where we’re based, but also in Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and London. We can even help if you’re based elsewhere in the world.

What if you can’t research my family tree? Will I be charged a fee?

No. I always carry out free, no obligation research during initial enquiry, to see if it’s possible to trace your family tree. If I don’t think it is possible, then I will be unable to continue and you won’t be charged for the initial research.

I’m not based in the UK. Can you still research my ancestors?

I specialise in helping American and Australian families to trace their UK ancestors. If you’re based in the USA or Australia and you’d like to discover your family’s past, please contact me and I will carry out some initial research to see if I can trace your family line. This initial research is free and you are under no obligation.

Once my family tree research is complete, what do I get?

Options for presentation of the finished research are discussed at the outset and confirmed in my quotation.

These include your very own family tree and a quality presentation folder for you to keep and treasure forever. More recently, the report is supplied in paperback form, in colour on 120gsm paper.

This will include all the family groups, for example man and wife (or wives) and their immediate children plus for each group – any relevant birth, baptism, death, marriage, census and WW1 service record or pension details.

There will also be a CD disc of all the data electronically as images or PDFs to see and read plus as a family tree in Family Tree Maker 2017 format. Please note, this software can be purchased separately. Additionally, files that can be read in a number of genealogical software packages [my favourite one is FREE].

A full printed family tree is optional and can be priced on an individual basis, depending on the size of tree and paper/canvas option.

Finally, I always meet my clients to present them with their family tree and talk through their family history.
