After a long career in national newspapers, retiring at an executive level after 30 years, I turned my long-time hobby of genealogy and family history into a second career. I have written for the major commercial family history magazines on a variety of topics, ranging from serious articles to more light-hearted subjects of genealogical interest. I have researched celebrity family trees and helped readers to solve “Brick walls” in their researches. I have my own blog on celebrity genealogies at: www.roystockdillgenealogy.com
I have lectured around the UK and in Canada and America and served on the Board of Trustees at the Society of Genealogists for 12 years. I was Commissioning Editor of the “My Ancestors Were…” series of books and a joint editor of the Society’s Centenary History (2011). In December 2012 I appeared in an episode of the popular television series, Who Do You Think You Are?, being filmed at the SoG helping the stand-up comedian John Bishop with his researches.
