Susan Moore Research

I began working as a freelance professional historical research after graduating from the University of St Andrews in 1974, starting as an assistant to professioinal genealogists first in the west country then in Scotland.

In 1976 I started my own professional research business in Scotland, and in 1980 moved to London from where I carried out research for clients all over the UK, working on family histories, manorial histories, house histories, and research for authors and lawyers.

From 1990 I have been based in Somerset, spending 2-3 days a week at the National Archives at Kew and the remainder at record offices and archives in the West Country.

Although highly experienced in all types of genealogical and historical research, my speciality is Chancery Proceedings, and in 2003 was invited by the Federation of Family History Societies to write an introductory booklet on Chancery Proceedings, “Family Feuds, An Introduction to Chancery Proceedings”. Copies are available on request.

In addition to Chancery Proceedings I have worked on detailed projects on land holding in parishes in Somerset following the Dissolution of the Monasteries; medieval and early modern tax and records relating to north west Wales; and of course, many family histories .

As a member of AGRA (the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives) I have the highest code of conduct. Budgeting of work remains in the control of the client, although I usually work in batches of 1-2 days at a time before reporting back. See website for details of charges.

Transcripts or abstracts are very willingly undertaken for all types and ages of documents, particularly wills, deeds, diaries, and of course Chancery Proceedings.

No travelling costs are charged for research at Kew, and costs of visits to other record offices are charged following agreement with the client.
